Gijs Gieskes developes his own instrumentarium by circuit bending, bug hoppin' & crap-stitching. By these techniques he practises memetism* in a technical cultural sense. Implanting these newborn methods right into public systems turns it into a uncontrollable organism. From this starting point an operesk meme will be created instantly on the evening itself.

WHO Is? Gijs Gieskes (nl)
Gijs invents & reinvents tools and applications mostly in the audio and visual area from an autarcic standpoint (note diy as a form). From almost (P)re-historical principles as how the wheel turns to more nowadays matters as you tubes. It is a most profound symbiosis by bending materials as wood, metal and strings (in the technical senses) and bug hoppin' & crap-stitching of digital resources. Re-appropriating tools for new purposes, making inventive hardware projects, such as his Feedback video log, Strobo VJ machine or PCB hand painted circuit board, is what Gijs Gieskes enjoys most. Educated as an industrial designer, he now casts Gameboy Bricks in concrete to build a garden path or a spinning photoelectronic acid machine.
Gieskes’ work and live performances are a fantastic example of where hardware hacking can take you.

PROGRAM
The evening consists of demonstrations of several of Gijs his recently developed internet applications in which he bends the possibilities several tools serves the audience. It results in for example the YouTube Tracker with which the user can organise a complete sound and vision orchestre. In this case it is to be used like a multipurpose synthesizer. During the presentation visitors can explore themselves the possible uses.
Gijs will be there to guide if nessecary.
This pre informational perfo installation can be seen as an operesque setting in which visitors as well as the virtual parts used as partitural components are to be seen as staged objects in a anadigital space.

• a demonstration of the whimsical assembling process involved in the process of creating song-poem music.
This will include original lyrics presented by members of the audience, which will be transformed into a song with a
melody behind the scenes and these songs will then be performed within minutes of completion by our house band!
• Jamie Meltzer’s documentary film “Off The Charts: The Song-Poem Story”.

Phil X Milstein began his musical career in 1987 with the launch of The Velvet Underground Appreciation Society.
Furthermore, he was an avid collector of cassette tapes; he collaborated on countless musical productions, and even produced some himself. He performed music and also produced music with, among others, Jad Fair, Maureen 'Moe' Tucker and Thurston Moore.
He also wrote countless acerbic music reviews for the American cult zine, Bananafish.
Moreover, he also penned countless song lyrics, which gave him specific insights into the qualities of what it takes to be a ‘song-poet’.

He refers to himself as a musical sawyer, but he is also a researcher and writes about lost cultural treasures and curiosities such as the legendary Dion McGregor, who talked in his sleep and the bedeviled proto-rockabilly artist Nervous Norvus; and many more subjects along these lines.
From 1991 to 2003, Phil Milstein served as the curator of the American Song-Poem Music Archives, which has since been made extensively via the Internet. Check here!

He has received Ruby Litchfield and AsiaLink awards and served as an InterArts peer for the Australia Council. Michael is the co-founder of the Donkey Institute of Contemporary Art (DICA), a non profit space that travels Beijing on the back of a donkey.

HOW
In THE MOURNING SHOW one day, in the middle of a snow time and the end of a pandemic scare, radio DJ Chris Evans is presenting his regular BBC morning show. His phone-in, concerning people's different 'winter warmer' recipes and tips, commences. He is called by three ladies, with three very different, and increasingly strange 'winter warmers'. Across the course of his radio show, the three callers slowly proceed, through subtle demonic methods, to drive the DJ to the point of insanity, then past the point of no return, to his death in the snow. A banana skin and a window also play some part in this.

The opera takes the structural framework of Greek tragedy (plus the 'Agon' element of Greek comedy), and supplants as the compositional basis of the episodes musical models roughly across Monteverdi, Mozart, and Verdi, researching the use of frameworks in contemporary music and reflecting the music and operatic form upon itself. It is also an exploration of the idea of pre-recorded opera - every voice, apart from the DJ, will be recorded into the soundtrack. This idea is both an aesthetic exploration and a practicality - creating a performance piece that is simple and quick to present in diverse spaces.

The 'Chorus' sections (within the Greek tragedy structure) are performed by a medieval Plague Doctor, who sings in the Enochian language of John Dee & Edward Kelley, upon the occasions the DJ puts on a song. This Plague Doctor also opens and closes the work with airings on a gramophone of Enrico Caruso arias.

The staging and presentation will be simple and concise, with a slight air of vulgarity, and occasional use of old forms of stage-magic for the appearance of apparitions at intervals. The piece will also contain a video-stream throughout, showing the corridor behind the 'studio door', apparently normal but with occasional massacred-doll faces.

ERGO PHIZMIZ
Over the past ten years Ergo Phizmiz has developed a reputation as one of the most prolific and consistently inventive artists working today. Across the mediums of composition, radio-art, songwriting, installations, video-art, collage, and performance he has constantly kept in motion, exploring the outer-reaches of his artform.

Opera is a running thread also through Ergo's music. As a teenager obsessed by operetta he composed twelve. Most recently he composed the score for a puppet-opera by Patrick Sims & Buchinger's Boot Marionettes 'The Snow Flea', which premiered in Marseille, November 2009. He recently completed 'The Mourning Show', an opera produced by DE PLAYER about UK radio DJ Chris Evans, which premieres Rotterdam, May 2010 and is currently working on new material for the score of the forthcoming work 'The Old Man of the Mountain' by Patrick Sims, which also features music by Ata Ebtekar, a new album of experimental pop, a new collaboration with People Like Us, a mechanical opera on Joseph Grimaldi, and restoring a Pianola.

Other artists Ergo has collaborated with include David Fenech, The The, Satanicpornocultshop, Safety Scissors, members of The Bees, Vernon Lenoir, Twink, and Irene Moon. He has composed film soundtracks for Christian Marclay, Zenith Pitts, Martha Moopette, Erik Bumbledonk, and Namaiki. He has a long running collaboration in radio-art, particularly sound-effects and foley production, with the sound-designer The Travelling Mongoose.

He has created many radio-art pieces for BBC Radio 3, including a specially created live electronic music performance broadcast; the radio-art-disco-sex extravaganza 'Wholepole: The Discotheque of Erotic Misery'; the music for 'Poetry Lab'; short, intense works of comedy, wordplay, sound-effects and music 'Pointballing'; and the recently completed 'Paul Klee, a Balloon, The Moon, Music and Me', a piece that combines techniques of animation applied to sound to create something part art-history, part science-fiction, part Broadway-musical, part programme-music, and part sound-collage.

WHY
In the COM.POST series 2010 MEMETISM is a guideline to create new performative soundpieces leaning forward or bending over to opera, music(al), perfo-oriëntated, ritualistic slaughter, group autistics, chamber meetings amongst others. Four productions will be constructed. For this year we invited Ergo Phizmiz (uk), Gijs Gieskes (nl, The Broken Penis Orchestra (us) and Harald Sack Ziegler (de). The first edition of this year is mister Phizmiz his dazzling THE MOURNING SHOW. An opera which fits in a suitcase and is easy to transport but impressive in it's refined content and output.

This DE PLAYER production will also appear this week at Extrapool, Nijmegen (06-05-2010, try-out) and Les Atelier Claus, Bruxelles (09-05-2010) and later this year on more stages in Holland and the rest of Europe.

ABOUT
-TOXOPLASMOSIS is a musical project by Nate Young and Alivia Zivich from Detroit. They run AA Records in it's full sense. A label which is known for their homecut lathecuts with beautiful packaging and unexpected choices in hard-line music.
Coming from projects like Wolf Eyes and Demons they now will present their newborn Toxoplasmosis in the name of 'The Father The Son and The Holy Ghost'

-LUDO MICH is a brilliant and already legendary player in the field of underground art already since the '70 as Fluxus artist, filmmaker and performer, and of big influence on the contemporary experimental scene. For his films he made his own soundtracks with dadaïstic poetry, scream voices, untuned instruments and concrete objects. Tonight he will perform 'No Parity, Symmetry is Broken' a vocal performance in which all these elements will come together.

-LYSISTRATA: We will screen Ludo Mich's film 'Lysistrata' (1976, 52'); loosely translated to 'She Who Disbands Armies'. It is an anti-war Greek comedy, written in 411 BCE by Aristophanes. A group of women go on a sex strike as long as their husbands persist in going to war, thus the play is also an allegory of the war of the sexes. Mich adapted the play for a 1976 film in which all the actors and actresses were naked throughout.

-ORPHAN FAIRYTALE is the solo monniker of Eva van Deuren, member of the lady folk troupe Maskesmachine. She has already been in a performative connection with DE PLAYER from the start of the club, when she was part of Chocotoff. In her sound she presents a particular blend of glass harmonica / general midi gamelan / ocean-maiden sirensongs which is both a joy to behold and, 'Let's face it', pretty far removed from current trends regarding organized sound ...

THE WILD CLASSICAL MUSIC ENSEMBLE is a truly unique band consisting of 4 mentally challenged musicians (Lynh, Johan, Rudy and Kim) and their ‘conductor’ Damien Magnette. They bring a challenging mix of punk, noise and free music. Something totally different than the well known dutch orchestra Josti-band. The project started in November 2007, thanks to the social-artistic association vzw WIT.h. (www.vzwwith.org) The 4 artists all work in different fine art media in the “de zandberg” studio (www.artotheek.be) and show a desire and talent for making music…. So that's how it all began.

Since the beginning the WCME's musical research has been based on free improvisation, sound and object experimentations. The WCME has also tried to develop a knowledge and control of its musical energy in order to organize and construct within the Spontaneity. That’s what led them to developing orchestration symbols and experimentation around musical notations.

The WCME has recently started integrating punk/rock riffs, composed by Kim Verbeke, the band's guitarist. These new melodico-rythmic bases gave a new impulse to the band and let to what it has become: a mix of rock, punk, noise, and free music.

CASSIS CORNUTA will surprise us this evening with a performance, soundscape or lecture. But probably all in one.

CASSIS CORNUTA has been combining musique concrète, analog synthesizer carpets, weirdo acid, noise, fieldrecordings, tape music, free jazz etc since 1974 in a puddle of madness spiced with odd staring, dozens of plants (cacti to be more specific), a encyclopedic knowledge about soundart, and an insane collection of hats!

Besides that he does a weekly radioshow on Radio Centraal in Antwerp for the past 25 years, mainly playing a combination of recycled music, home recordings and a hell lot of noise!

Recently Ultra Eczema released a 12” with 4 holes entitled “Mag ik eens even in uw broek pissen” (“Would you mind if I pissed in your pants”). Another beautiful collection of loner synth sound that makes your hangovers or LSD trips worth going for, the strangest beat oriented 303 and 808 acid snoop, and a combination of piss, wind and wood to bring back the good old plunderblur of the new blockaders.

In his lecture entitled 'De tijd van het tussen' [The Time of In Between], artist and theorist Raoul Teulings (1959) not only investigates the emergence of the concept of interface, which already existed as far back as the early 18th century(!), but also how this offered a fundamentally different worldview and perception of humankind from the more conventional version.

But, because the interface functions as a consequence of interaction, the portrayal of humankind and our worldview are never addressed in a static or unchanging manner but more from a dynamic, changeable and 'becoming' angle. This is what the title refers to: the quality of the interface is based on the used and 'aged' time and inevitably finds an 'in-between' space. In this 'in-between', humans, the world and media are not placed in opposition to one another but in a more intertwined relationship.

It will certainly not surprise most people that many avant-garde artists as well as avant-garde thinkers are attracted to this notion of the interface.

On the basis of how the interface was received and using the ideas of French philosopher, Henri Bergson (1859-1941) as a focus, Raoul Teulings reveals the intellectual and artistic landscape from which the break in the former worldview can be deduced. In this manner he reveals the shift from a predominantly spatialised way of thinking to a more transitional way of thinkinG [duurdenken], which ultimately forms a revolutionary force with regard to our current views.

In de lezing met de titel 'De tijd van het tussen' onderzoekt kunstenaar en theoreticus Raoul Teulings (1959) niet alleen het ontstaan van de interface zoals die eigenlijk al vanaf de 18e eeuw(!) bestaat maar ook hoe deze een fundamenteel ander wereldbeeld en mensbeeld veronderstelt dan de conventionele variant. Doordat de interface bij de gratie van de interactie functioneert worden mens- en wereldbeeld niet als statisch en onveranderlijk aangesproken maar veeleer op hun dynamiek, veranderlijkheid en ‘wording’. Dat verklaart de titel: de kwaliteit van de interface berust op een gebruikte en ‘doorleefde’ tijd en vindt onomstotelijk in een ‘tussen’ plaats. In dit ‘tussen’ zijn mens, wereld en medium niet tegen over elkaar geplaatst maar in een veel in elkaar vervloeiende verhouding gezet.

Aan de hand van deze receptie van de interface en met als brandpunt het denken van de Franse filosoof Henri Bergson (1859-1941) laat Raoul Teulings het intellectuele en artistieke landschap zien waarvan uit de genoemde breuk met ons voorgaande wereldbeeld te distilleren valt. Zo laat zij vooral een verschuiving zien van een sterk verruimtelijkt denken naar een meer ‘duurdenken’ die van revolutionaire kracht is ten aanzien van onze bestaande opvattingen.

Enkele significante voorbeelden daarvan zullen getoond worden van kunstenaars als James Joyce, Dziga Vertov en Marcel Duchamp tot aan hedendaagse cinema en filosofie. Vooral de zgn. differentiedenkers als Martin Heidegger, Gilles Deleuze en Jacques Derrida ontlenen veel aan Bergson. Zij laten een Bergsoniaans beeld van de tijd als duur zien als grondslaggevende factor bij het maken van een artistieke of filosofische bewering.

De opkomst van een huidig verschijnsel als de digitalisering maakt voor sommige hedendaagse denkers als Brian Massumi en Mark Hansen duidelijk dat men vanuit de interface opnieuw over wat cultuur inhoudt moet gaan nadenken.

Met name de hierbij optredende notie om het lichaam als interface te gaan zien levert enkele zeer bijzondere artistieke, filosofische en wetenschappelijke wendingen op. Hierbij zijn tevens de neurowetenschappelijke ontdekkingen van de afgelopen decennia toonaangevend. Zij hebben tot gevolg dat een voortdurend herformuleren wordt gevraagd ten aanzien van wat en wie we zijn. Met name de voorlopers in dit onderzoek zoals de neurologen Antonio Damasio en Joseph Ledoux resoneren op hun beurt belangrijke elementen uit het denken van Bergson. Maar het belangrijkste punt in de lezing zal de gedachte zijn dat we ons kennelijk al midden in een renaissance bevinden. De wens is dat deze prikkelende lezing daarvoor veel ‘food for thought’ en gesprekstof oplevert. De tijd van het tussen wil daar een nuttige bijdrage aan leveren.

Een spreker –kunstenaar, filosoof, muzikant, filmmaker, journalist- wordt gevraagd een uiteenzetting te doen voor het publiek over een volstrekt eigen wetenschappelijk/ historisch/ cultureel onderzoek en thema. Vanavond Raoul Teulings, kunstenaar en theoreticus.

‘De Spreekselreeksen’ van Extrapool zal doorlopend mede worden gepresenteerd in respectievelijk Yourspace/het van Abbemuseum te Eindhoven en de Player te Rotterdam.

ULTRA ECZEMA is the publishing arm of the record label run by Dennis Tyfus. Tyfus is fascinated by, among other things, poetry, Dada, the Situationists and their radical stance, punk, metal and noise. He has assembled an interesting catalogue of sound produced by peripheral artists, with each audio object presented in a uniquely designed package.

THE MOUTH is the oral organ with which humans use to feed themselves and/or gossip about other humans. This is the precise quality that Tyfus wants to emphasise in the production of some of his highly appropriate audio pieces. The special exhibition will be designed in the TV Buddah tradition in an installation-type setting where the eavesdropper can certainly expect something special.

“I have a provisional recording of throat-singing in a Spanish swimming pool and a sing-along with some parrots from the Antwerp Zoo for the A side.”

Here is one way to put it: better 1 bird in the hand than 10 in the mouth. This all falls in line with Tyfus’s other ULTRA ECZEMA productions of which an exquisite selection will be exhibited here during the course of the events.

Furthermore, some meaningful orality-related issues will be raised during the live event on Saturday 6 February.

ABOUT 'REGIOGELUIDEN' [AREASOUNDS]

In a world where people are mobile and spend most of their time in an urban environment, we are becoming increasingly dependent on traffic signs and city maps. Besides these visual aids, distinctive buildings can also help orient us in this environment. But does a city also have distinctive sounds that help us find our bearings? For instance, can you actually hear Rotterdam? And if so, do these sounds help us feel at home in the city where we live?

Melle Smets, through his deep search research study has effectively re-learned how to see, not with his eyes but with his ears. Blind people from the Rotterdam area guided Smets blindfolded through the city. The presentation will be performed at the dining table wich is tuned by Gerben Kokmeijer (student Sonologie The Hague). Kees Went, sounddesigner, will set the theoretical framework for approaching sound in public space. Elske Revelman de Vries will present three ear prosthesis based on the militairy audioradars from the early 20th century and Peter Altena will show us his ‘soundalbum’ about one of his trips abroad. In between these info-moments, audiofragments of interviews and remarkable soundfiles, results of Melle's most recent research, will be added and mixed. As a real radio host, Melle Smets, is turning the dinning table into his studio and making us his radio-audience.

The 'hard kijken' research consisted of interviews with experts from a variety of disciplines including scientists, artists, designers, and experience experts (from the Afrikaanderwijk).

By approaching your environment from the angle of learning to contemplate about what you actually see leads you to a new way of witnessing your environment beyond mere everyday phenomena. 'Hard kijken' or 'experience research' flirts, questions, pushes and pulls on the stubborn habit expressed in a old saying: 'How we present the world is how we understand it.' The focus here is on the landscape's values that are difficult to measure, such as cultural values and the zeitgeist. These values are impossible to express in terms of facts and figures. They can, however, be expressed through stories, memories, experiences and uninhibited observations. These values give meaning to a specific place and create a context in which we can bond with our surroundings.

We will chop in 2010 with the last 8-INCH of our 2009 series in our old location at Tolhuisstraat 107 BG. Not as doing the retro style but because of indecent location situation and it’s regulations to serve the citizens of our city.

Anyway it will be a full head party. GANGPOL & MIT are absolutely representatives of those who give form to music out of artistique sources as we aim in our 8-INCH series.

As a music and graphic duet, GANGPOL & MIT works on a peculiar world of deviant cartoon inhabited by colourful and geometrical creatures - a bestiary that evolves in lysergic environments and takes part in apocalyptic stories.

In this project, melodies crush and rebuild various styles, sources that are dug out from a huge digital sandbox : coconut swing, boogaloo noise, tango massacre, imaginary folklores...Behind the aspect of a technicolor frenzy and of a DIY entertainment, an absurd and uncanny dimension appears : a dog that has been run over, a technological apocalypse, some terrorist confettis exploding everywhere...

For the project FLORIDA initiated by TENT/'t Gemaal, DE PLAYER is invited to do a showcase of their activities. We will present our releases as well as two events. One of them is a 'work in progress' project in our 8-INCH series with the american strangle-B-rock band FAT WORM OF ERROR

For this version of 8-INCH FAT WORM OF ERROR will come over and work for one week on their 'thing'. They will make 50 handmade covers for he new release and prepare a specific show for the 19th to give it all a rocket. Prepare for a eclectic and (almost) chaotic but cheerfull point of view on sound and esthetic. We are alive and you will notice.

Voor deze 5de editie wordt het sterk visueel georienteerde geluidsgezelschap Fat Worm Of Error speciaal ingevlogen. Zij zullen in ‘t Gemaal een week werken aan de specifieke 8’ uitgave. Het proces en de resultaten dienen als expositie. Tegelijkertijd zal gedurende de week een setting worden gerealiseerd waarin de uitgave wordt gelanceerd. In een polymorfe presentatie op zaterdag 19 december zal dan duidelijk worden waar dit allemaal voor nodig was. FWOE zal een exclusief concert geven en een aanverwant programma geeft daarbij reden tot inkeer.

Fat Worm of Error bypassed the traditional rock and roll adventure for a trip to the land of noisemakers. Their sound is a jubilant visit to the avant world without the bitter aftertaste of pretense and self-loathing. What sounds like a pack of kindergarteners high on sugar banging away is actually the product of hard work and careful planning. Every little squelch, squeak, moan and drone serves a purpose -- the premise behind that purpose remains to be seen. Songs may sound as if a wolf has broken into the henhouse, but with each subsequent listen there's something minute and intricate to discover. Their album Pregnant Babies Pregnant with Pregnant Babies is as straightforward as an album gets. The band name and the sad-state-of-affairs album title should clue you in that this isn't an album built on a wall of melodious sound -- this is an album built on an apocalyptic death rattle as interpreted by adults living a reverted childhood.

The random placement of silly lyrics, the carefully nonchalant instrumentation, the happy-go lucky nature of Fat Worm of Error; these are the qualities that should draw your utmost attention.

8 INCH is a new series in DE PLAYER's program.

6 artists are invited to make a the limited edition (50) of specific vinyl (square 8') and printwork made by artist and DE PLAYER.

Each issue will be launched with an exhibition and a multi-disciplined live event that highlights the inspiration, concept and fetish of the artists involved. In other words, it reflects the mental state in which the original music is created.

For 2009 the series emphasizes the relation between music/sound, performance and visual art. We selected the participating artists because of the particular choices they have made in combining these different media. They combine, extract, deform, reconstruct and invent their own pasts and futures in very organic and inimitable ways. The results are always unique, rousing and provocative.

'Persoonlijkheid, Utopie en de roep van het Karakter.'

Wim Verhoeven maakt een wezenlijk onderscheid tussen persoonlijkheid en karakter. Het vormt een missing link in zijn denken, de verzoenende verbinding tussen de realiteit van een hopeloos bestaan in een vijandige wereld en daarbinnen in een verraderlijk zelf; en de blijvende intuïtie, noem het hoop, van een mogelijk NUT.

Zijn betoog ploegt van de oerknal door de daaruit volgende betrekkingencascade tegen het licht van de trikaya, via een politieke analyse van het periodiek systeem en de gedachten over binding en afscheiding van Otto Rank , zet de weg voort waar de gedachtegang over overtolligen, utopisten en verwenden in zijn boek NUT bleven dralen, in een poging vat te krijgen op de gruwel van de uit geatomiseerde utopie voortspruitende hanggedachten, om uit te komen op een mogelijke triomf van het karakter over de persoonlijkheid en de geruststellende aanwezigheid van een mogelijk Opperwezenlijk principe daarachter.

In de onderzoekstentoonstelling Florida presenteren uiteenlopende voorbeelden van vernieuwende kunstenaarsinitiatieven hun praktijk. Het zijn vaak kleinschalige initiatieven gericht op het experiment in de kunst. Informele plekken waarmee ze zich met hun werk persoonlijk tot hun omgeving en hun publiek verhouden. Werken in het besloten atelier lijkt voorbij, direct contact staat voorop. Wat beweegt ze?

De initiatieven gebruiken ’t Gemaal als platform om hun ideeën en werk uit te wisselen met bezoekers en met elkaar. Elk initiatief betrekt een week lang ’t Gemaal en verbindt zijn activiteiten in ’t Gemaal met het programma op zijn eigen plek. BMB con. (Collaborative Experiences with Sound, Image and Space) was founded by Justin Bennett, Roelf Toxopeus and Wikke ’t Hooft in 1989. So actually they celebrate their 20th anniversary right now. Since 2006 BMB con. is a collaboration between a BMB coreduo and different individuals and groups, depending on the occasion.
Topics include collaboration, innovation, improvisation, accidental incidents and the nature of unpredictability in artistic creation. Right at this moment Justin Bennett's work, but also the work of BMB con. is being showed in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. (31 oktober 2009 t/m 28 februari 2010, http://www.gemeentemuseum.nl).
Bennett's work has been recently rewarded by giving him the Ouborg Prijs 2009.

Meeting with Rietveld students and Jan Konings to do fieldwork in the Afrikaanderwijk and present their research goals as far as they defined them so far. A practical, informational and educational meeting. From here on several case studies will be part of afdeling Openbaar Geluid.

'afdeling Openbaar Geluid' will research possibilities, do case studies, organise expert meetings, initiate practical applications, negotiate with public partners. The 'Afrikaanderwijk' in Rotterdam will be the area to concentrate on. The coming years, this area will pass a huge transformation. These developments and processes give us the possibility to change our point of view on sound as a medium to work with by designing public space. One of the case studies will be the settlement of a soundstage as DE PLAYER in Afrikaanderwijk.

Paul Bogaers (nl) is visual artist, photographer and collectioneur. In 2008 he released his boek 'Onderlangs' (416 pages/paperback, IJzer publishers) which is completely constructed (cutting & glueing) out of particles from romantic trashy paperbacks.
In his readings he presents series of photos from his archive to point out the proces of working on 'Onderlangs'. Also he uses his immens photo archive for discursive tales about 'collecting'.

Granjon is interested in the co-evolution of man and machine. He works with electronica, robots, video and programmed software with which he creates a series of robots, installations, videos and live performances. He manages to exploit a series of complex technical actions and animate everyday gadgets to playful and humorous effect. His creations are commentaries on the effects of the ever-increasing technical complexity of our surroundings. Granjon is a teacher at the Time Based Practice Department of the School of Fine-Art in Cardiff.

For the COM.POST project, Paul Granjon has chosen to work in the African Market, creating in the space of a day a live composition fully based on the resources of the market. He focuses on the reuse of the ingredients one finds in the African Market and the chief principles upon which the market functions.

- September 26: Granjon and his team of co-performers will spend the day gathering the necessary orchestral items in the market to create a ‘big band,’ which will then compose a piece that will be performed later that day. The instruments that they produce and the recordings of the performance will then be made available in the market as part of a full 1-day cycle.

Some are born as little boys. Some are born as little girls. And some are born bra-less. London’s NO BRA is one of those types. She looks like a woman and talks like a man. A bizarre individual who has managed to create a formidable anti-establishment image for herself with an explicit critique of the very contemporary hedonism she works from. Pure art house; an act in the tradition of Suicide and DAF, stripped down to the bare essentials of a the a dudy club sound. Her music refuses to conform to any known commercial genre.

As part of DE PLAYER’s 8-INCH series, NO BRA will perform on Thursday September 17 with, among others, TV Baby (New York) and the DJs from the Experimental Circle Club/Junk Club (London Southend) who will be seen performing in an ongoing setting based on No Bra’s personal taste.

The No Bra production as part of the 8-INCH series will presented in a dummy format during the evening’s performances. A special 10'-version will also be available

DE PLAYER opens the first European solo exhibition entitled 'SILENCE' of this New Zealand artist and experimental musician. Curated by freelance curator Roland Groenenboom, the exhibition contains recent watercolours, paintings and drawings made in New Zealand, as well as those made during his residency in Paris (June – August 2009). It also includes in situ works by MORLEY, who will spend most of August in Rotterdam to work both on visual art and recordings.
In his visual production, MORLEY explores how the vast territory of sound may be used within the truly visual practice of painting, among others focusing on how silence and painting relate to each other. His research takes on different forms: from paintings on seven-inch records to watercolours of vintage guitar amplifier and speaker stacks, and from watercolours of anonymous high-rise buildings to paintings of record players that appear to play a vinyl record.

DE PLAYER presents in its new series 8-INCH the second edition with MICHAEL MORLEY from New Zealand. MICHAEL MORLEY is a visual artist. He sings and plays guitar and laptop as a member of THE DEAD C, but also records on his own (and with collaborators) as GATE. Earlier, in the 1980s, Morley was a member of Wreck Small Speakers On Expensive Stereos.
MORLEY sees sounds as an elementary medium with which it is possible to construct space. Not in a sexless clean aesthetical and theoretical way, but as it is. Music not made by tonal systems, but build out of the real scratch and possibly hard to swallow. His lyrics (if used) reflect this primal attitude.

For the 8-INCH, 50 unique artist editions will be released with original sound and artwork on square 8-INCH vinyl and cover by MICHAEL MORLEY. The issue further contains a poster and a photo.
On the evening MICHAEL MORLEY will perform a site-specific live set, featuring SPECIAL GUESTS (to be announced later). MORLEY is currently also working on new recordings in the studio of WORM, Rotterdam.

îlot (( is an audio intervention in public space to shift the acoustic ecology � �of the city, pointed on a highly frequented traffic circle in Rotterdam, in the area of the Afrikaanderplein. The modulation is composed in relation to celestial bodies and the sea to expand space in perception by audio and forms a hybrid between urban and nature elements.

The installation wants you to tune in to an ocean of sounds, which is connected and dependent on the tides in Rotterdam. The constellation of the frequences interconnects with the sun, moon and the hearing of the cohabitants of the city. Each passerby gets memorized and will leave a personal ocean for the next person crossing îlot (( to experience and to listen to..

Electronic composer and artist, Anja has studied new media at Hyperwerk, Basel Switzerland. The school focuses on process, management and design in the field of new Media and offered her the possibility to combine the interests of art and science. The analyzes of Media and the reflection of technology influence her work and artistic approach. Her creations are concept -based and investigates such notions as audiovisual composition, science phenomena, social studies and information architecture. Her work methodology focuses on collaboration and interactivity; hence leading to numerous and varied multi media collaborations with other artists, musicians and web-designers. For COM.POST 2009 Jan Konings researches the phenomenon of sound in public space.
Not by looking at it as a damaging factor which needs to be banned or dimmed but as an esthetical factor which could be used as an architectural instrument to shape to the public arena. Because of the fact that such a study needs time, he initiated in co-operation with DE PLAYER a new thing in town: 'afdeling Openbaar Geluid' (department Public Sound).

'afdeling Openbaar Geluid' will research possibilities, do case studies, organise expert meetings, initiate practical applications, negotiate with public partners. The 'Afrikaanderwijk' in Rotterdam will be the area to concentrate on. The coming years, this area will pass a huge transformation. These developments and processes give us the possibility to change our point of view on sound as a medium to work with by designing public space. One of the case studies will be the settlement of a soundstage as DE PLAYER in Afrikaanderwijk.

Sunday the 14th of June 2009 the 'afdeling Openbaar Geluid' will be officially founded. From there on the project will continue for the coming years. This sunday Jan Konings will do a reading on his concepts and ideas behind 'afdeling Openbaar Geluid', in a dinner-setting with sound interventions.

In de publieke ruimte wordt geluid meestal benaderd vanuit het hinderlijke of de overlast. De inrichting van de publieke ruimte wordt benaderd vanuit reductie of bestrijding. Geluidsschermen langs snelwegen, 'mosquito's' tegen hangjeugd. In ieder geval vrijwel altijd vanuit negatieve impulsen. Nooit wordt er gedacht aan toepassingen vanuit toevoeging van geluid als architectonisch element dat effect heeft op ruimte in emotionele zin. Als bouwsteen van die publieke ruimte.

In de branche van industrieel ontwerpen heerst een geheel andere benadering. Hierin wordt bij productontwikkeling specifiek geluid toegevoegd of gerealiseerd door middel van specifiek materiaalgebruik om zo de gebruiker/klant dat gevoel te geven waar hij of zij naar zoekt cq verlangt. Bij een bekend automerk werken bijvoorbeeld 150 mensen die zich in de ontwerpfase specifiek bezig houden met de factor geluid. Hoe klinkt het portier als het dichtslaat, hoe klinkt de stoel als je gaat zitten, hoe klinkt de claxon, richtingaanwijzer, etc. Een bekend koffieapparaatje krijgt een geluid toegevoegd omdat dat refereert naar wat de gebruiker associeert met dat wat authentiek cappucino is.

Jan Konings, zelf oorspronkelijk industrieel ontwerper en nu zeer actief als ontwerper en criticaster van ontwerp en visie op publieke ruimte, gaat voor COM.POST #7 een programma samenstellen waarin kennis gedeeld wordt, modellen opgesteld worden en beproefd en waar een actieve rol is weggelegd voor publiek en vakmensen.

SCOTT FOUST:

Outsider artist Scott Foust is a theoretical visionair who expresses himself with music, composition, film and performance. He's looking for the pure and fresh esthetics of existence and expresses this with uncompromising works he realises as a truly independent artist. Already for around 30 years Foust produces a large variety of works, positioning himself through explicit esthetic choices and a strong engaged content. He embraces beauty by offending power as a long lasting idealist. In 1983 he founded his Swill Radio record label. In 1997 Foust along with Karla Borecky and dr. Timothy Shortell founded 'the anti-naturals', an art and theory group which has few but dedicated members worldwide. Earlier he published some articles in our BIGMAG.#2 and made the music for one side of the vinyl with his long lasting music project called Idea Fire Company (IFCO) wich he founded in 1988 also with Borecky. And he's still going strong this captain.

Tonight he will show his recently finished feature movie 'Here's to Love' and will perform his longest half hour in show business entitled 'The Four Accomplishments'.

Here's To Love! the long-awaited feature film by idea fire company / swill radio’s scott foust. featuring a cast of friends & close ones (Matt Krefting, Meara O’Reilly, Jessi Swenson, Foust himself as “the commander”, Graham Lambkin as “control”).

It’s a heady, abstract-but-narrative affair with many long, lingering shots of winter-night-times and an excellent score (featuring music by Idea Fire Company, Tart, The Pickle Factory, XX Committee, and Y Front) and reminds of the glory of early silent movies, where the beauty of the image was dominant. The film invites the viewer to reflect directly on the spot and is challenged to have patience. It is a truly physical en mental experience by surrendering yourself to this timeless world of moving pictures and music. A drone of sound and image. The story itself is the story of a quest by three young people to find their aesthetic idol and save him from his degraded state.

In making this film, Foust has arrived at something approaching a metaphor for the artistic dilemma as faced by any artist who works in the marginal and misunderstood areas of avant-garde or conceptual art. This film has real staying power and a core of strangeness that means it remains memorable, with a distinctive taste all of its own... It is a total entertainment package. something for everyone. a lecture (lecture tour), a dance piece (lessons), sound poetry (sorry to hear about your collapse) and a theatre piece (der saufer). just me, my wits, a microphone, and a backing tape. also features my trademark temporal distortion, which is why i like to call it 'the longest half hour in show business'.

Machinist aims with its mechanized side at transporting the auditor from

Inspired by artists such as Richard Serra and Anselm Kiefer Machinist

works on melting sound, art and architecture and buildings full of

machines.

Abstraction in sound where the spatial experience acts as the center. One

moment pure gothic/industrial darkambient and the other moment like

dronebands such as Sunn o))), finally also at a hard alternative of

hypnotising kraut/new-age or doomnoise and metal.

GOODIEPAL joins forces with ALLE MED BALLONER OG TERRASSER

Goodiepal has to be one of the more singular performers in electronic / experimental music. His use of material(s) is akin to that of visual artists but his work is mostly presented on the musical stage. He is at once musician, philosopher, sculptor, appearing on stage as some kind of conjurer giving a sense that a performance could be anything and go anywhere.

Alle med balloner og terrasser (Hovedstaden, Denmark) create multilayered washes of sound with vocals, drums, electronics and have been described as'...[A] bizar dream of inarticulate vocals and stumbling drums, containing several parallel stories moving at different speeds over various distances, trying to move a sophisticated rhythmical mountain.'

Anders Jørgen Mogensen (b. 1980) is the frontman of bohemian heavy metal band KLoAK, and runs his own pristine vocal based three piece under different monikers.

Andreas Hauer-Jensen (f.1979) is a founding member of Düreforsög and part of the extensive social experiment Mit Nye Band. Has also provided rhythms for The Bleeder Group, TS Hawk & His Great Mongo Dilmuns, Vagn E. Olsson's El Hombre Invisible and Goodiepal.

With the joining of these two there's bound to be some kind of twist in what they do as individuals, therefore this should prove to be a very special show indeed.

with collective composition, notation, time, and artificial and
alternative intelligence.

Royal Academy of Music in Denmark, a mental hospital in Thorshavn on the
Faroe Islands, and King's College in London.

- 'A Snare is A Bell' by Eric Thielemans

Eric Thielemans is the drummer pioneer from belgium. dealing with jazz, spaced freemusic, noise, percussion music for theatre, etcetera.

Only a few months ago, he released his ' A Snare is A Bell' on the Ultra Eczema label from Dennis Tyfus.

This meditative and psychedelic drumroll, based on the harmonic resonances created by pressrolling the shit out of it, was inspired by Thielemans' blood/genetic code and psychodramatic youth.

The smaller the wristmovements, the bigger the sounds and when Thielmans starts using his voice, it seems like Glen Branca and his 567 drummers have entered the building.

Building up strongly to the point of absolute silence, this performance seems the ultimate start of a new time, space and sound area for DE PLAYER.

- food/performance by Neandertaler is a performance collective of Gabrielle M. Barros and Ieke Trinks.

These 2 young female artists use their body as a vehicle to position themselves in the artworld.

The early text works of NY composer Beth Anderson relate to both minimal music and poetry, in her own words: a kind of vocal-percussive music.

Samuel vriezen: 10 lezers (2008) - by Jackson Mac Low Band, Cora Schmeiser, Antoine Beuger, Toine Horvers, Ton Pompert, Gabriëlle Barros Martins, Taylan Susam.
The readers sit amongst the audience reading a book, and occasionally speaking words from it: composer and poet Samuel Vriezen is in the first place a conceptual artist.

Gabriëlle Barros Martins: Woorden als woorden in de loop van de tijd (2007) The audience.
Her performance is a strict registration of spoken words sounding in space by the voices of people from the audience.

Antoine Beuger: Landscapes of absence (2001) - by Cora Schmeiser, Antoine Beuger, Taylan Susam, Dante Boon.
Antoine, co-initiator and central figure of the composers-group Wandelweiser, works around the concept of music as a process of sound in time and space. 'Landscapes' is based on a Emily Dickinson poem and accompanied by a video work of Els van Riel.

Toine Horvers: Scheepshoorn (2004) - by Jackson Mac Low Band, Toine Horvers and Cora Schmeiser.
A ship's horn in the form of a choral piece, originally written for the 'MS. Noordereiland Scheepshoornkoor'.

Georges Aperghis: Récitations pour voix seule (1977 - 1978) - by Cora Schmeiser
Aperghis is a Greek composer exploring extreme dynamics in the sound of words. A breathtaking virtuoso performance by soprano Cora Schmeiser.

Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion: Speaking dance (2004) - fragment video registration by Hugo Gelendinning 2008
Two male dancers play a light-footed game with the sound of words in the space.

John Cage: parts from Songbooks (1970) - by Cora Schmeiser
A 90-parts music-theatre piece for voices, dependent on the choices of the performer.

Samuel Beckett: last pages of Unnamebles (1953) by Ton Pompert
These pages, full of words and sentences, are as dense as the thoughts in someone's mind. Often without interpunction, they are not written for reading aloud, but it might be interesting to do anyway.

Sandra Johnston: performance (2008) by Sandra Johnston
Her performances are centred around the notion of territory. Each work is site specific. Recently Sandra has been using speech in order to connect locations, memories and recent experiences.

Dylan Newcomb: Talking about dancing as a language without words
Dylans choreographies often show a kind of ritualistic character. In a lecture/dance performance he will show the relation between his movements and speech.

Toine Horvers: Inis Oírr panorama in four directions (2003) - by Toine Horvers
A description of a vertical panorama in four directions of the compass. Its reading has a certain rhythm because of the repetitions, thus becoming as it were a poem with four verses.

We cherish the memory of dandy, loner, conceptual artist and 'actionist' Stephan Bloth and dedicate a lecture to him. He and his so-called 'boy group' performed artistic actions and often crashed various decadent upper class parties during the 70s and were considered 'an early gay punk band, but then without instruments'.

** 8 mm films by HANS SCHEIRL on transition
Hans Scheirl has made many super-8 films among them the classics Super-8 Girl games, Zigzagged Rivulet is creeping up shamelessly wetting thighs, 1/2 frogs fuck fast and Summer of 1995. The term 'transition' is used in the transsexual and transgender community for the stretch of time it takes a person to change into the other gender. Scheirl himself zigzags his way through a large, open space of possibilities.This space of appropriation, play and experimentation would be virtually non-existent if it wasn't for art and the dynamic between art and the artfulness of living a different life. The role of art in his transitioning was obvious in his performance and film work of the 70ies, 80ies + 90ies. Scheirls cult classic Dandy Dust (1998) exposes all this dilemma's and possibilities and johnny de philo wrote a piece on Dandy Dust for BIGMAG. III. Tonight we will show a selection of Hans Scheirl his early 8 mm films.

Marie Losier, born in France in 1972, is a filmmaker and curator working in New York City. She has shown her films and videos at museums, galleries, biennials and festivals worldwide. She just completed a short documentary on musician and filmmaker Tony Conrad-Tony Conrad DreaMinimalist- that was presented at The Rotterdam Film Festival 2008. Currently she is working on her first feature film, a portrait of on the musical genius Genesis P-Orridge, and her band Psychic TV. with the title PANDROGENY: A LOVE STORY.
For BIGMAG. III Marie Losier and Breyer P. Orridge (Gen and Jaye) wrote a specific piece from both of their views on this project. Tonight we will show material from this filmproject. Under the title 'Jaye Lady Jaye' ( a work in progress) we can already taste and celebrate the life, work and legendary love of Genesis P-Orridge and Lady Jaye.

The Rotterdam threesome in arts Kimberly Clark contributed a photograph for the POLYTOPIA issue representing the fall of the upperclass. For the live event they will show a videoloop consisting of a snapshotserie of their nasty moments on the dirtpile of the society of art and party.

Jantine Wijnja (artist, writer and curator) investigated on the life of Ted Owens; self proclaimed 'Psycho-Kinesis Man' and Ambassador for Space Intelligence. Flamboyant, obsessive, morose and good-natured. Ted's claim to fame: his ability to manipulate weather using psychokinetic powers. For BIG MAG. III, she wrote a piece on him entitled 'Ted Owens: The art of Pulling a Universe Out of a Hat'.
For this evening she will do a reading on her ongoing investigation on Ted Owens. Her obsession for his obsession, which has everything to do with intangibly impossible processes.

In the second world war, groups as the Wandervogel, Swingjugend or Edelweiss Piraten were mainly opposing the regime and expressed themselves by their music and clothing. Sound is politics, politics is sound. At 23rd of April 1978 the internationally renowned jazz musician Toots Tielemans just started his concert when Flemish nationalists stormed the stage and tore up his sheet music saying: 'No negro music at our singing festival'. Erectro was created as an attempt to fill up a void felt by Gustav Reichen in todays music. Feeling like everything was so clean and licked, he tried to create a darker and a more dirty sound. Together with Hellmut Muller he's trying to translate stories of the electric forest. They are now working on their 5th album called 'Small Mishaps' - songs for King Edward the 2nd. The album is inspired by the tragic life of King Edward the 2nd. It contains (as usual) dark basses filled with fairytale elements resting on a bed of dreaminess standing in the royal hall...naked. I confess!
A real sweaty electro club sound with a constant sexual undertone and a strong consciousness for the classics of the past in their nowadays sound.

Roderik de Man (Bandung/Indonesië 1941) studied percussion with Frans van der Kraan and theory of music at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. At the same time he participated in composition classes with Kees van Baaren and worked in the electronic studio as a student of Dick Raaymakers. Since 1972 he teaches theoretica subjects and composition to young composers at the same institute.
He composes purely instrumental as well as instrumental/electronic music. His oeuvre consists of solo pieces, chambermusic and works for choir, large ensembles and orchestra.

Jorge Isaac (1974, Caracas) completed his professional training under the tutelage of Walter van Hauwe at the Amsterdam Conservatory in 2000. In 2002 received his master degree on contemporary performance & live electronics at the same institution. In 2006 he was appointed as Recorder Professor at the Amsterdam Conservatory, succeeding the worldwide recorder-icon Walter van Hauwe.
Isaac’s specialist field is in contemporary music and the use of live electronics.

Inspirational source:
In 'Über das Marionetten Theater' (On the Puppet Theater, 1810) Heinrich von Kleist, through his protagonist Herr C., discourses on the infinite grace of inanimate objects. The Puppet Theater was not written for marionettes to play, but as a description of their function and value. He compares the capacities of live performers and marionettes according to romantic aesthetics.
The music comsists of an instrumental part for Sopranino, Tenor and Contrabass recorder (Paetzold) and an electronic part on CD.

Mensa Secunda - a multimedia performance for one musician (Jorge Isaac), blockflutes, electronics (tape parrts and live electronics), 3 dancers and video projecctions.

Mensa Secunda is a multimedia project realized by Jorge Isaac, a recorder player and performer (improvisation/ live electronics) involving dance, video projection
and live electronics (a.o. Body Synth and Big Eye) and Roderik de Man .
The subject is the life of the ambitious Roman materchef Apicius who sacrifies everything to find the perfect recipe. Roderik de Man realized the electronic parts and the compositions. For the cd Electrified Music II, electroacoustic compositions by Roderik de Man produced by Electroshock records, this concertversion was made by Jorge Isaac and the composer.

Touch and Go - for violin, bass clarinet and piano

Touch-and-go was written at the request of Robert Szreder, Harry Sparnaay en Polo de Haas. The title refers to the idea of the work: a kind of contest between the three performers. They prompt each other and take the lead in turn.

Ecoute, écoute! - for Bass clarinet & tape (cd)
(Roderik de Man 1999)

Ecoute, ecoute! was composed at the request of Harry Sparnaay for the occasion of the “Who’s afraid of?' project, organized by Iris van der Goot. In this project prominent contemporary soloworks were combined with newly written compositions.
Ecoute, écoute! is a tribute to promotors of contemporary music, in this case the renowned bass clarinettist Harry Sparnaay. This prominent musician has fulfilled this role for quite some time and is a source of inspiration for many composers.
The opening text of the work describes the almost ritual actions of the musician which often
precede the actual playing, they are spoken by Harry’s wife, Silvia Castillo. Since Silvia and Harry used to communicate in French during the first stage of their marriage, often using the words: “écoute, écoute!, the choice of the title was a predictable one.

Chordis Canam - for harpsichord & tape
(Roderik de Man 1989)

The title of this composition was taken from a text which originally was painted in large golden letters on the inside of the harpsichord. After transforming the baroque exterior of the instrument into a contemporary design by the frisian painter Sies Bleeker, the text disappeared. De Man composed Chordis Canam as a tribute to Annelie de Man, in the Netherlands an abroad a well-known performer of contemporary music and to the marvellous versitality of the harpsichord.
All sounds, except one, were derived from this harpsichord, no other equipement than microphones and taperecorders was used. It was the composer's object to bring the sounds on tape and the live harpsichord as closely together as possible.

Sin decanso - for recorder & tape
(Roderik de Man 2002)

One who has had the pleasure of attending a concert by Jorge will understand why the piece was called Sin descanso, which means ‘without rest'. He is the type of musician who tirelessly searches for new possibilities and extensions of his instrumental domain. These musicians are of great importance to composers because they stimulate them to search for new possibilities and prompt them to positively exploit the characteristics of these instruments. The piece may be regarded as a journey through a landscape which formed by sopranino, tenor, basset and Paetzold bass. In the beginning as well at the end, reference is made to folk music. The piece starts in ‘Sardana' fashion, employing the simultaneous playing of the sopranino and a small drum attached to the wrist. All the sounds of the tape part were derived from a beat on a drum, sampled blockflute sounds and improvisations by Jorge Isaac . The larger part is strictly notated, the musician however is given the opportunity to improvise at certain points.The live and electronic part are intended as equal partners, in the end the live musician turns out to be the true soloist after all.

Barbara is now working on the project PHASE PORTRAIT,
a workshop and performance for multiple players interacting with objects both amplified and acoustic workshopped developed and performed in a site specific location.

The workshop will essentially consist of a set of investigations and exercises in physical interactions with material objects in the space Het Gemaal. Our workshop participants will be taking some common simple objects and using them as sound-making devices. Some of these objects will be amplified and some of them will not. We will explore the specific nature of the space and the possibilities of working with multiple acoustic and amplified sound objects.

The resulting “sonic scenes” will be defined and determined by the capabilities and textures inherent in the instruments/objects and also on the interactions of participants and objects in this particular acoustic environment.
Our intended outcome is to produce our Phase Portrait, the dynamical picture of our system as it has evolved at that point in time.

Barbara Ellison is a sound and visual artist. Many of her compositions develop from unconventional sound synthesis/processing methods inspired by her interest in scientific studies of the transition from order to chaos in nature.Her electroacoustic work plays with ambiguities of what is 'natural' or 'artificial' in the sonic landscape. 'Natural' or 'acoustic' sounds are processed, digitized, or abstracted; whereas synthetic or 'artificial' sound seem animate and organic. Within this framework, the electron is not 'unnatural', the electron is alive, is part of nature, therefore electronic/digital sources are understood to be as 'natural' as other 'natural' sound sources. Acoustic instruments are explored as sound making devices, removed from their traditional associations, freeing them to participate with electronic sources on equal terms within the soundscape.
As a composer she treats sound as 'matter'; understanding it as transformation of energy, both complex and multi-dimensional. She is exploring a multi-parametric approach to sculpting sound, imagining it as fluid architecture, a living material, as matter in constant transformation.

Barbara Ellison, born in Ireland, began her studies with a degree in Fine Art/Sculpture at the National College of Art and Design and later gained a Masters in Music and Media Technologies from Trinity College Dublin [1998-2000]. She then moved to the Netherlands where she completed the Masters programme of Sonology at The Institute of Sonology in The Hague in 2000-2003. She has been living and working in The Hague since 2000.

Radar Eyes: A survey of hallucinogenic print making

Daevid Allen, formerly known from projects as Soft Machine and Gong, will land on earth at DE PLAYER and bring his alienated texts and music on stage with his project called University of Errors

Daevid Allen's career has been well documented over the years. It began in the late 50's in Paris experimenting with tape loops with Terry Riley and doing music for performance works with William Burroughs. The early 60's found him in England working with teenaged Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, Kevin Ayers and Hugh Hopper, which eventually became Soft Machine. Along with Pink Floyd they were the most influential bands in the UK Psychedelic scene of 1966-67, and Jimi Hendrix's favorite band. Daevid left Soft Machine late in1967 and relocated to Paris where he eventually formed Gong, who are regarded by many as the greatest psychedelic band ever.

Rachael and Ed Marszewski from Version Festival, Lumpen and Proximity magazine (Chicago) are bringing a group show representing the works of experimental printmakers to Holland. The exhibition contains work sharing a similar aesthetic highlighting hand drawn, ephemeral work. Many of the prints depict distortions of perception, altered states of awareness and geometric, sometimes hallucinogenic subject matter or compositions. Canadian printmaking duo Seripop (http://www.seripop.com) will be featured along with a few dozen other artists from the inaugural show in Chicago.

'Forms in dark and white, moving'
At the base of each of the five pieces lies a specific concept or caracteristic movement. At the same time they are connected by elements which feature in each piece and make the composition cohesive. The pieces all have a dark atmosfere, but the harmonies are often clear and diatonic (based on 'white notes').

OVER 'Forms in dark and white, moving'

Forms in dark and white, moving is een cyclus van vijf stukken voor viool (tevens electrische viool), slagwerk en piano (tevens versterkte of electrische piano). Aan elk van de vijf delen (of “vormen”) ligt één specifiek concept of karakteristieke beweging ten grondslag. Daarnaast zijn er elementen die in elk van de vijf deeltjes terugkeren, waardoor ze een eenheid vormen. De stukken hebben veelal een donkere sfeer, maar de harmonieën zijn meestal helder en diatonisch (gebaseerd op “witte noten”).

I. Interrupted Swell. Het eerste deel is volledig (tot op de enkele noot) symmetrisch. De basis wordt gevormd door één lange golf of swell: een harmonisch statische textuur neemt toe in intensiteit en interne activiteit, bereikt een hoogtepunt en neemt daarna weer af in intensiteit en activiteit. Op het hoogtepunt echter wordt de swell onderbroken door een ritueel aandoend intermezzo (waarbij ritmes en proporties afgeleid zijn van de Fibonacci-getallen**).

II. Stuttering Machine. Uitgangspunt voor deel II was het beeld van een energiek voortrazende, maar haperende machine: steeds lijkt het mechaniek even vast te lopen en gaat de machine iets langzamer draaien, om vervolgens toch weer op gang te komen en op volle toeren te draaien. Dit deel bevat echo’s van minimal music.

III. Pensive Song. Het centrale langzame deel is het meest lyrische en tevens langste deel van de cyclus. Er heerst een contemplatieve, melancholische sfeer. Het stuk begint rustig en intiem, maar bouwt tegen het einde toe op naar een grote dramatiek.

IV. Unisono Toccata. Het vierde deel is een virtuoze toccata met een lichtvoetige energie; het stuk is vooral gebaseerd op barokachtige figuraties die in een hoog tempo unisono gespeeld worden. De piano heeft een belangrijke solo.

V. White Material. Het slotdeel bestaat uitsluitend uit “witte” noten (de witte toetsen van de piano) en bevat daarmee geen enkele chromatiek. Na een veertiental massieve akkoorden (waarvan de tijdsduur wederom door de Fibonacci-reeks bepaald is) gaat de muziek over in rustig voortgaande, etherische, dromerige klanken.

Central to the composition will be a new version of the Tromboscillator, a fusion of electronics and trombone which Hilary has played since 2000. This instrument offers up a vast audible landscape, a hall of acoustic mirrors, a labyrinth of ever changing pathways. As in our experiences in cyberspace and dream worlds, this sound world offers limitless possibilities for experimenting with the self, our ideas, our projections, our underwater and outer space wishes!

As we witness attempts by real estate corporations to take over creative space by trying to convert what are artist led locations into dead yuppie zones, we are confronted and need to find ways to go beyond the shiny, unaffordable, computer designed version we are expected to accept. If we do not want to become consumer zombies we must start to learn to travel to other dimensions and create new versions of where we want to live, which will be reflected in the apparent world we live in, eventually creating our own unreal estates!

This concert offers up a vision of new approaches to music which can affect how we play in life, and which is perhaps a memory of certain future gigs on Jupiter!

Nicole Fiselier (1982) - soprano, started playing the violin at four and recently graduated from the CODARTS conservatory in Rotterdam.

Luuk van Rossum (1987) - percussionist, is in his third year at the CODARTS conservatory in Rotterdam, won the Prinses Christina Concours already in 2005 and played in the Carnegie Recital Hall, so he should be able to handle DE PLAYER.

Wall-Russ (1968) - visual designer, lives and works in Amsterdam but is willing to come to Rotterdam for COM.POST..

At this moment our first guest Peter Szely is working in DE PLAYER on his soundpiece about Rotterdam as a city of migration, about leaving and arriving. The field recordings of four walks or boattrips in the different wind-directions will serve as a frame for his 8 channel soundpiece. Recordings of immigrants, playing their native instruments here in Katendrecht, will be processed through the computer and used as musical elements for 'Rotterdam: An Electric Poem'.

Reinaart Vanhoe is going to accompany Peter on the trips and meetings with his camera, generating images to go with the composition. Also joining in: Katendrecht-based rapper/MC UNORTHADOX

In addition, we will screen some films from the city-archive, to refresh our historical memory on the subject of migration and for sheer fun.

Austria's Mosz label has long been pushing their special brand of minimal experimental music, and this latest from Szely (his second album) is no different. Although instantly recognisable as electronic music, Szely also manages to embed a number of acoustic instruments into his compositions, often thanks to some quite fabulous collaborators; Nina Erber, Nik Hummer, Wolfgang Kopper, Martin Siewert and others pop up to add their special touch to the proceedings and the results are highly rewarding. The album begins with the Kraut-rock influenced rhythmic throb of 'Theme 1' which has Szely's layers of digital noise placed over thick beats and chopped bass. 'Theme 2' takes this still further with an even more percussive number which at times could be mistaken for free jazz, albeit filtered through a chain of digital effects. The results are at times noisy and at others almost ambient and subdued, but 'Processing Other Perspectives' is never less than arresting...

Merzbow is een extreem experimenteel muzikaal project dat in 1979 te Tokyo ontstaan is. Merzbow is het pseudoniem van de Japanner Masami Akita (1956). Het pseudoniem is afgeleid van Kurt schwitters gekende Merzbau. Deze benaming gebruikt hij vooral voor zijn experimentele noise albums. Zijn enorme catalogus van ongeveer 300 cd's, lp's en cassettes maakt hem een van de belangrijkste figuren in de hedendaagse noise scene. Hij werkte samen met artiesten als Mike Patton, Sunn O))) en Otomo Yoshihide, maar de meeste albums onder zijn pseudoniem zijn door hem alleen gemaakt.

Zijn vroegste werk word gekenmerkt door een collage cut-up stijl maar al snel neemt de meer abstracte noise de overhand. De op het eerste gehoor niets ontziende geluidsmuur blijkt bij nadere kennismaking echter bijzonder veel schakeringen te bevatten.

SOME HISTORY
Raving Mad Carlos, born Carlos Szappanos in Buenos Aires, Argentina, takes at the age of 8 his first steps in electrodance to the beats of Georgio Moroder's 'From here to eternity' amplified by a glorious Winco record player. At 12 he converts to Heavy Metal. In 1985 discovers the Stranglers and the British post punk scene. Purchases a cheap bass and starts jamming with friends. In 1987 starts buying The Fall records, giving him the status of Fall fan NÂ° 1 in Argentina ( he owns 85 Fall records increasing).. In 1988 teams up with guitarrist Alfred B. and together form Delmonico Drome. Next year DD plays live for the first time in a disco experimenting with acid house. In 1992 DD enrolls drummer Osky (actual guest-star in RMC) and shakes the undergroungnoise scene as a power trio . In 1993 RMC emmigrates to London and gets in touch with bands such as Elastica, Honey Smugglers,etc. 1995 finds Delmonico Drome at their best, gigging repeatedly in the B.A. under circuit. Their raw, garage-punk sound is compared to the etcetera etcetera ...........
WHAT WILL BE
His new set includes Sampler, ultra-analog keyboards, tapes and vox.The sampler input enhances his sound up to Lo-Hi, but still leaking distorted rock-noise. He has recycled Link Wray riffs, Hasil Adkins rants, samples from obscure films and actor voices that make for his unique sound.

Where the video was about, I don’t know, but who gives a flower about that. ‘Can I be your Bratwurst, please?’ That’s the answer.

JAY VAN BUREN: Meeting in 2nd Life (cybercontact)
A Vikinghat sporting artist who paints Furries. Exhibiting in Ars Virtua, a 3000 m2 two story building in virtual space. Clumsey with the keyboard but when his painting got stolen and he meets 0100101110101101 he finds himself emotionally involved. The hardware gets unimportant when the emotions are connected with the doing. We will meet him in 2nd Life and do some talking.
JAN HUIJBEN: Doing something (intervention)
Like he always does. With undermining normalisations of hip, unhip, known and unknown phenomenens. No medium is the message. Eggs and rum or metalprint for loosers and winning misfits.

Quote van een kunstenaar die graag anoniem wenste te blijven (hierna benoemd als K). Na gedwongen ontslag bij de Roteb vanwege het ongeoorloofd ophalen van bouwmateriaal is deze kunstenaar tot overmaat van ramp binnenkort ook dakloos.
Om deurwaarders buiten te houden, heeft K onlangs het gehele blok, betreffende de Tolhuislaan/Katendrechtsestraat/Rechthuisstraat, dicht getimmerd met metalen platen. Dit gebeurde uiteraard niet met toestemming van de bewoners. De bewoners organisatie Katendrecht was furieus. De woningbouw coöperatie 'De Nieuwe Unie' daarentegen zag hier wel een mooie oplossing in voor wanbetalers en liet alle huizen op Katendrecht dicht timmeren. De bewoners organisatie deelde als reactie hierop gratis schroeven draaiers uit met torx bitjes, opdat buurt bewoners hun bevriende buren konden bevrijden uit hun onFortuijnlijke situatie. Hierop stelde Opstelten een preventief fouilleer-actie in waardoor nu menig Kaap bewoner thuis komt met zijn gulp op een kier.
K zit nog altijd in zijn woning en wordt door postduiven bevoorraad. Ondertussen heeft K in alle rust zijn Marihuana kwekerij op volle toeren lopen en heeft hiermee al een aardig kapitaaltje opgebouwd voor zijn reis met de SS Rotterdam naar New York waar K een nieuwe carriere gaat beginnen als hovenier.

Zondagavond 29 april a.s neemt de eerste onofficiële, en dus extra-experimentele COM.POST [post-gecomponeerd] een aanvang.

En wat heb dat dan allemaal te betekenen vraagt u zich af...

Welnu, het volgende is de bedoeling: samen eten en samen kijken en samen luisteren. In een heerlijk intieme sfeer. Naast elkaar zitten aan tafel en naast elkaar zitten in het donker en naast elkaar zitten in het licht.

uiuiui koo (= impoldierte volksmuziek van outer space) is een trio, bestaande uit Anne Wellmer (synthesizer), Cora Schmeiser (stem) en Nina Hitz (cello). Zij werken sinds kort samen onder deze toch wel vreemde naam (laten we het maar eerlijk zeggen). Over het resultaat van deze samenwerking is nog weinig bekend, maar dat het eigenzinnig is zal hoogstwaarschijnlijk zijn. Daarnaast hebben we Francien van Everdingen gevraagd om vooraf een aantal van haar films te tonen, waarbij vragen rijzen zoals: wat is een boom? Dit gebeurd op 16 mm. en super8 projectoren. Op ons eigen bigscreen.

Kortom, een avond stilletjes genieten van wat een aantal van onze medemensen bezig houd.

INTERVIEW (excerpts)

How old is Bobby?
Sometimes he looks pretty young, but up close he’s all weird and creepy. Bobby was born on June 13th, 1967. Since 1998, Bobby has resorted to dramatic make-up and fanciful costumes to distract audiences from his fading youth. The ravages of time may have pitted and cracked his once boyish appearance, but there’s still a kindly twinkle in his eye, just like Santa Claus.

Is Bobby an American citizen? I’ve heard rumors that he’s from South America or an Isreali.
Yes. Bobby is as American as apple-pie. He was born in New York City, but moved continuously throughout his childhood, spending several formative early years in Argentina and Brazil, where his parents helped further the interests of powerful multi-national corporations. Most of his adolescence was spent in several different suburbs of Chicago, IL, where Bobby lives even today. He has never traveled to the Middle East.

How tall is Bobby? My friend says an average person could pick him up and drown him in a teacup.
Tell your friend to be careful, because Bobby has taught himself how to swim and certainly wouldn’t flounder in a mere teacup. But he is smaller than the average hulking, obese, hormone-dazed American male. He is a compact 5’4', seeming slightly larger on stage with the aid of special shoes, customized miniature instruments, and the specially trained midget session musicians who accompany him.

What are Bobby’s hobbies?
Right now, he is just crazy about helicopters. He has many toy 'choppers' and subscribes to many rotary wing aviation magazines. He is convinced that once he owns one, he will achieve personal freedom and mobility on an almost spiritual level. He spends much of his time designing helipads and heliports for his home. He is also an excellent cook, and enjoys tending his roses.

What’s Bobby’s favorite color?
Butter, or more specifically, the color of butter colored leather upholstery.

Is Bobby nice? Does he act all freaky?
No, in person he has the demeanor of a shy professional golfer. He tends to stand in the corner of a room until no one notices him, and then he’ll get on his hands and knees and scurry around between your legs like a large cockroach. He can be very kind, especially to animals and children. He has an elaborate series of hand signals he uses around strangers to communicate. But he’s easily ignored. He’s basically harmless.

BIG MAG. is een magazine dat een 12” vinyl picture disc bevat, in combinatie met drukwerk. Het blad dient als blauwdruk van waar DSPS/DE PLAYER voor staat en als extensie van het fysieke podium. Het is een magazine met vele originele bijdragen van kunstenaars, tekstschrijvers en muzikanten die de afgelopen jaren bij DE PLAYER op het podium hebben gestaan of in de toekomst zullen staan.

Alle issues zijn volledig engelstalig en bedoeld voor internationale verspreiding. Er worden in 2007 vier exemplaren gerealiseerd. Iedere uitgave gaat met een avond met live-programma gepaard. Deze presentaties zullen meerkoppige mutantische situaties zijn met meerdere live-acts, lezingen, film en curiosa.

BIG MAG. #1 presenteert op 12” geluidsbijdragen van GOODIEPAL (DK) en JESSICA RYLAN (US) en beeld op vinyl van JOEP VAN LIEFLAND and JANI HORVONEN. Het bevat een A1 poster van HEIN DINGEMANS met op de achterzijde geschiedenis en data van DE PLAYER / DSPS.
Een 28 pagina’s full-color drukwerk van 30 x 30 cm bevat beeld en artikelen van KEREN CYTTER, JIM XENTOS, BART PLANTENGA, COSTES, MELTED MEN, GODFRIED WILLEM RAES, INOX KAPELL, MARIA MOULIN, LUKAS SIMONIS, FERLET GREPEN, MARC VAN ELBURG en anderen.

In 2007 DEPLAYER/DSPS will release 4 issues of a magazine project called BIG MAG.

BIG MAG. is a zine which is to be seen as an actual catalogue of that what DE PLAYER/DSPS stands for as an art space. It is to be seen as an extension of the fysical stage. It will be a magazine with lots of original contributions by artists who had been on DE PLAYER-stage, could have been or will be one day.
Every magazine contains a 12”vinyl picturedisc in combination with several printwork.

In it’s 1st issue, the BIG MAG will present on 12”, soundcontributions of GOODIEPAL and JESSICA RYLAN and images on vinyl by JOEP VAN LIEFLAND and JANI HORVONEN. It will also contain a poster by HEIN DINGEMANS and full color printwork with articles and images from KEREN CYTTER, JIM XENTOS, BART PLANTENGA, COSTES, MELTED MEN, GODFRIED WILLEM RAES, INOX KAPELL, MARIA MOULIN, LUKAS SIMONIS and others.
Also there will be a promo-CD included from project of AUGSBURGER TAFELCONFECT with contributions of KEVIN BLECHDOM, MAURO PAWLOWSKY, COOLHAVEN and JOHN HEGRE.

In 2007 every quarter of the year an issue will be presented. The presentations will be multi-headed mutantic situations were several live acts will be part among objects and other curiosa to be shown.

Voorlopig dan toch echt de laatste Classico.. Het was een succesvolle en warme kennismaking met het klassiek en gecomponeerde onderdeel in het brede scala van muziekuitingen:
We hoorden en zagen een PIANO FORTE in het echt terwijl we net daarvoor nog aan een experimentele tempura knaagden.
We dachten bij een saxofoon alleen aan jazz totdat we Raaf Hekkema Paganini hoorden spelen en zingen tegelijk.
We lieten onze oren masseren door 4 mooie mexicaanse mannen, 10 trommels en Steve Reich.
En heel recentelijk sloegen we met hamers op kreeften waarna we ondergedompeld werden in een niet mis te verstane portie sturm und drang van Mendelssohn.

Kortom, we geloven dat we de componeerde muziek weer op een nieuw voetstuk hebben kunnen zetten. Om dat te vieren wordt de laatste Classico dan ook een klein feestje; een ode aan de muziek, het instrument en de muzikant.

*'Gekaut!! (Bis es von alleine herunterlaeuft)' is based on the life and ideas of Horace Fletcher (1849 - 1919). Before becoming the worldwide known inventor of fletcherism, he made a fortune as manufacturer of printers' ink and importer of silk and other Oriental merchandise. He was one of the founders of the Bohemian Club, and was famous locally as a snap shooter and manager of the New Orleans Opera. Around 1895 he was so fat that he could hardly turn around. A life-insurance company declined to accept him as a risk.

When he even missed the funeral of one of his best friends because of short breath he realized that he was too fat, harrowed by indigestion. Therefore, at the very beginng of the 20th century Fletcher invented a system for the proper mastication of food called 'fletcherism'. Whith worldwar one Fletcher had the full opportunity to demonstrate the worth of Fletcherism in Belgium. There he worked as member of the Commission for Relief and taught some 8 million starving Belgians to get the full nourishment of their scant rations.

Fletcher was reported to be one of the best natured and least fanatical of reformers; he enjoyed the good things of life and was publicly seen taking second helpings of turkey.

'Gekaut!! (Bis es von alleine herunterlaeuft)' tells the story of Fletcher in a lost lingo called 'Kauderwelsch' which has some resemblances to the tongue of 'The Katzenjammer Kids' in their early days, some teeth chattering and a rising up inbetween forming nice little paragraphs.

Hermann Bohlen, Jahrgang 1963, seit 1988 in Berlin seßhaft. 88-90 Mitarbeit beim 'Nachtflug' von Radio 100, Hörstücke über Baratterie (Selbstversenkung) und Geräuschfragen beim Essen und Reden (Schmatzen). Abschluß des Studiums 1992 mit einer Arbeit über Onomatopöie (Lautmalerei) in der chinesischen Sprache. Seit 1994 Hörspielautor und -produzent. 1995 Stipendiat der Hörspielautoren-Werksatt des Literarischen Colloquiums Berlin (LCB), aus der das Stück Prozedur 7.7.0 hervorging (1997 mit dem Hörspielpreis der Berlin-Brandenburger Akademie der Künste ausgezeichnet). 2000 Konzeption und Präsentation des Plopp!-Wettbewerbs für unabhängige Hörspielmacher an der Akademie der Künste.

Dit kwartet werd opgericht in 2006 met de bedoeling klassieke muziek op historische instrumenten te spelen. Na een succesvol debuut in augustus in Berlijn namen ze deel aan The Mannheim Chamber Festival Competition alwaar ze niet alleen de eerste prijs in de wacht sleepten, maar ook nog eens de publieksprijs en de mediaprijs!. Daar werden ze gecoached door John Holloway en het Quartet Concerto Köln.

The quartet was formed in May 2006 with the intention of performing classical music on historical instruments. After a successful debut concert in Berlin in August they participated in the Mannheim Chamber Music Festival Competition in September, winning not only the First Prize, but also the Audience and Media Prizes. There they received coaching from John Holloway and the Quartet Concerto Köln.
O yes, their official name is QUARTETTO RUMOROSO, meaning, noisy! And this Mendelssohn's rather turbulent...

Het kunstenaarspaar Hans & Jakob werkt installatief en performatief telkens aangepast aan de SITUATIE:

Ze zullen voor deze dag een aantal van hun schilderij/foto/film-objecten naar „bravo!“ meebrengen en deze samen met “found objects” tot een inloopbare, trans-mediale installatie verbouwen, beïnvloed door de bijzondere ruimtelijke omstandigheden.

Hans Scheirl

De kunstenaar en filmmaker Hans Scheirl heeft zijn oorsprong in een performatieve praktijk, waar life-art en transgender- of cyborg-ideeën in verschillende media vertaald worden. De transmediale operatie wordt met trans/genre/gender/rassificering/classificering parallel geschakeld. Hans Scheirl is internationaal bekend door zijn films (ROTE OHREN FETZEN DURCH ASCHE 1992, DANDY DUST 1998) en zijn installatieve schilderij.

Jakob Knebl

Jakob Knebl werkt op verschillende gebieden met fotografie en installaties, is co-programmeur van de off-space / artist run space – “auto” en bovendien ontwerper voor het kleding-label „house of the very island's royal club division middlesex klassenkampf but the question is where are you, now?”. Zijn/Haar werk is doordrongen van een politieke motivatie, wiens onderwerp zijn/haar trans-gender-ing is.

Dit kwartet, oorspronkelijk uit Mexico, nu deels woonachtig in Rotterdam, was winnaar van de 3e prijs tijdens de International Percussion Competition Luxemburg (IPCL) en bestaat uit vier uitzonderlijke percussionisten. Hun unieke geluid en presentatie geven het publiek een sensationele 'oormassage', zoals de naam van de groep al beloofd.

Het publiek kan deze wereld bezoeken en zijn uitgenodigd om te verblijven, van stoel te wisselen, te slapen, de ruimte te verlaten en te dromen. A continuous two hour performance of long stretched-out drone music performed by Lysn. The musicians have maps to guide their playing through the soundscapes they find themselves in. The audience can visit this world and are welcome to stay, change seats, sleep, leave and dream!

Lysn is a new group formed by Hilary Jeffery with a continuously changing
line-up. Lysn plays melodic and atmospheric music made with compositions,
improvisations and electronic drones.

Hilary Jeffery works as a musician, playing the trombone and composing in improvised, electronic and contemporary music. Recordings exist with Hugh Davies, Germ, Earthling, Sand, Kreepa, Band of Holy Joy, Jimi Tenor, The Meta Orchestra, Paul Dunmall Octet, Moksha Big Band, The Barton Workshop, Apa Ini, The Kilimanjaro Dark Jazz Ensemble and as a solo artist.

There are currently three live bands/projects which are central to Hilary's work, these are Kreepa ('instrumental-industrial-electronics'), Lysn ('melodic-atmospheric-soundscapes') and Sand ('electro-metal-voodoo-jazz').

Hilary has studied at Dartington College of Arts, the University of York, the Institute of Sonology and with James Fulkerson at the European Dance Development Centre in Arnhem, Netherlands. Subsequently Hilary has worked with dance in a wide variety of ways and with many choreographers including Aurora Corsano, Vania Gala, Mary O'Donnell, Jane Mason, Joao da Silva and Saburo Teshigawara (the latter with Sand).

Hilary currently lives in Amsterdam, plays often in local venues and co-organises a monthly series called AUXXX (Amsterdam Underkurrent XXX) at Overtoom 301. In addition to the underwater life of Amsterdam, Hilary often tours - travelling through the Neverlands, in Europe, the UK and elsewhere. Various trombones have accompanied Hilary to many inspiring places including the Sahara Desert (1990), Dartington Hall (1990), underground raves in the UK (early '90s), the Anthroposophic 'Goetheanum' (1994), Abney Park Cemetery in London (1996), Vienna Volksoper (2000), Tokyo New National Theatre (2000/2002), Stubnitz Boat (2001), burlesque cabarets in NYC (2001), Alicante Casino (2002), Potsdam Fabrik (2004) and Genk Mine (2005). As well as working as a musician Hilary writes and makes visual art.

Lieve mede-mensen,
de derde editie van Café de K staat in het teken van 'The Hitmachine goes de Fabriek'.

Wat??
De Fabriek is een collecief uit Zwolle dat sinds de jaren zeventig pioniers werk verricht in de tape scene, en sinds de jaren tachtig ook op vinyl en cd(R). Geluidskunst, Geluidscollages, Ambient, Tekno, Veldopnamen, Found Footage, nooit eerder gehoord geluid, daar was en is de Fabriek in geinteresseerd.
De Fabriek heeft the Hitmachine uit Nijmegen uitgenodigd samen een cd en hoes te maken voor het vermaarde Belgische EE Tapes. Dit zal tijdens deze aflevering gebeuren.

In KVDK zullen drie ruimtes ingericht worden.
Een met muziek- en geluids- apparatuur.
Een met tafels waar op Fabrieks wijze alle 300 hoezen gemaakt gaan worden.
Een met banken, tafels en stoelen om 'na te borrelen'. (u weet wat we bedoelen)

Er wordt een kleine club muzikanten uitgenodigd die zullen bijdragen aan het muzikale geluid voor de cd,
verder is iedereen welkom bij te dragen aan het maken van de hoezen. Ook het geluid van het hoezenmaken wordt opgenomen en verwerkt in de uiteindelijke mix.

De Bezetting Speelt is een jong Rotterdams ensemble dat kamermuziek brengt in de breedste zin van het woord. Uit een vaste basis van vijf blazers, vijf strijkers en piano worden steeds verschillende bezettingen gecreëerd, afhankelijk van het programma.

In deze tijd heeft hij gewerkt aan enkele schilderijen waar 'FURRIES' voor model stonden. Dit zijn mensen die het aangenaam vinden om een deel van hun leven als dier verkleed te tijd te verpozen.

In het kader van het kunstproject Deli-light - http://www.deli-light.nl - dat gaat over licht op het schiereiland Katendrecht, doe ik een beeldend onderzoek waarbij ik me consentreer op de beweging van het natuurlijke licht in relatie tot die van het kunstlicht zoals dat op Katendrecht waar te nemen is.
Ik heb een groep pas afgestudeerde kunstenaars gevraagd om vanaf de oevers rondom het Schiereiland, vanuit de vier windrichtingen een mondelinge beschrijving te geven van die bewegingen en lichtveranderingen.
Dat gebeurt van een half uur vóór tot een half uur ná zons op- en ondergang.
De vier observeerders zijn telefonisch verbonden met vier weergevers op het Deliplein, midden op Katendrecht.
Iedere opmerking van de observeerders wordt hardop herhaald door de weergevers.
Hun stemmen worden versterkt weergegeven zodat de beschrijvingen hoorbaar zijn voor bewoners en/of publiek op het plein.
Doordat de weergevers soms luisteren en en soms spreken zullen de vier stemmen elkaar soms overlappen en soms niet.

Fifi hengsten alias 'de-alsof-jij-zo-leuk-band', is een Nederretro trio.

Fifi Speelt op de hartslag; Experimentele, noodzakelijk geimproviseerde toch enigszins vastomlijnde nummers met irritante overgangen en rare intenties.

Raaf Hekkema is gek. En daar mogen wij blij mee zijn. Want anders hadden we nooit Paganini¹s beroemde caprices in een versie voor saxofoon gehad. Moet dat dan, zult u zeggen? Nee, maar het is wel een aanwinst voor het repertoire, zo leren we van de cd die getuigt van Hekkema¹s toegewijde monnikenarbeid. Zes jaar beet hij zich vast in de caprices. Het begon met een enkele die hij gewoon voor de lol speelde, zoals caprice nr. 16, en het werd langzaam maar zeker een steeds grotere uitdaging om alle caprices te transformeren tot een goede stuk muziek voor alt- of sopraansaxofoon. Hekkema haalde, zonder Paganini¹s origineel geweld aan te doen, alles uit de kast om zaken die normaal niet des saxofoons zijn, zoals meerstemmigheid, adequaat op te lossen. Een heel arsenaal aan hedendaagse technieken kwam er aan te pas en dat maakt van deze cd ook een soort state of the art wat het saxofoonspelen aangaat. Zaken als circulaire ademhaling, tegelijkertijd spelen en zingen en multiphonics komen langs, maar nooit als kunstje op zich. Steeds staat de techniek in dienst van het stuk zelf en dat tilt deze bewerkingen boven louter gekheid uit. Hekkema heeft er continu voor gezorgd dat zijn bewerkingen van deze voor de viool al uitdagende werken een goed stuk muziek voor de saxofoon opleverde. Dat hij daarbij soms wat verder van het origineel afwijkt en wat meer vrijheden neemt, zij hem daarbij direct vergeven. Uiteindelijk speelt hij alle caprices ook nog op zo¹n wijze dat het geen moment gaat vervelen. Digger Barnes (als naam ook bekend uit de serie Dallas) is een singer songwriter die doodgaan met de gitaar in klank omzet. Live worden zijn verhalen visueel begeleid door een analoge videoprojectiemethodiek van tekeningen, op platenspeler en dergelijke. Alles vraagt om kleinschaligheid en intimiteit. Daarvoor duiken we gewoon ergens een woning en en doen daar ons ding. Een beetje in de huiskamer muziekje genieten en plaatjes kijken, in de keuken rondhangen, even iets in de magnetron, een boekje lezen.

Uit Berlijn komt de secretaresse van de sharp-pop ingevlogen. Angie Reeds alter ego Barbara Brockhausen zal zich ongezouten presenteren. Terwijl de meeste danslustige Rotterdammers zich voortbewegen op de belegen beats van de Of Corso of Now & Wow-dj's, probeert De Player op geheel eigen wijze de wat abstractere dance te promoten. Import Berlijnster Angie Reed komt uit het nest van Stereo Total(ze leerde daar bassen) of het multi-collectief Chicks On Speed. Ook voelt ze zich verwant met Peaches, de Boy From Brazil, Eric D Clarke of de boys van International Pony uit Hamburg. De muziek komt uit haar music box en baant zich steunend en kreunend een weg door de groove heen. Het visuele gedeelte heeft deze duizendpoot ook al verzorgd, middels aangenaam in het oog springende animaties.

Madame P brengt acapella experimental soul. In haar live sets brengt zij de breedte van haar vocale technieken in beeld. Rauwe stembandgravures, maar evengoed zachtgelaagde boventonen. Middels real time live samplings wordt haaar solo-acapella opgebouwd. Verder gebruikt zij diverse effect-uinits en mionimale electronica om tot een totaalgeluid te komen.

Sstrakkk en messcherp. Dat is incite/. Eerder waren ze al in DE PLAYER te zien met een set en we zien ze graag terug. Electronica vanuit de rock'n roll approach. Ein, zwei, drei, vier, en dan begintde gortdroge maar meeslepende sound.

Bone-dry minmal electronics, fragmented slomo grooves and broken rhythmic arrangements played in sync with abstract grayscale videos.
incite/ was started late 2002 as a duo project of Kera Nagel (axiomatic integration) and André Aspelmeier (GradCom). >From the very start, incite/ has defined an highly authentic and unique sound on its own: The grainy loops and static noises arranged over sublow bass drum join up to a abstract glitch-hop that defies easy categorisation. Fragmented electric junk and fragile bursts of static noise join up with extra-charged sub-bass-kicks to form one subtle yet grinding flow in perfect conjunction with the intensity of the meticulously constructed stark-gray visuals.

KornreinigeR = Andreas Glabutschnig + Morgan Pekosh + members + friends of the wü-22 collective.
Een soort van duits amerikaanse vriendschap in deze band uit Berlijn die electronics mixed met uitbundige party attitude. Geen statische zaken, maar lambada-noise. Electropophiphop en de lenige body van Morgan verenigd, levert een spectacle naturelle.

SONIDO MARTINES (ARG)

DJ voor deze avond is SONIDO MARTINES. Hij komt uit de stal van de Festicumexen die in Argentinie de Cumbia-muziek (soort van zuidamerikaanse schlager voor het volk uit Colombia van oorsprong) een nieuw leven inblazen door uiterst experimentele benadering. Godfather van dit al is de welbekende Dick el Demasiado.
Onlangs was er een FestiCumex in het Van AbbeMuseum, en enkele daarvoor overgekomen artiesten hebben ons land nog niet verlaten. Speciaal voor deze avond zal SONIDO MARTINES als DJ de electronische kant van de Cumbia Experimental uit de kast trekken. Subsonisch en vertraagd, herkenbaar in de bron, maar lunatica in de uitwerking. Dat gaat wel doorsijpelen die avond.

DR BIBBER (NL)

Performatieve electronische low fi uit de stal van o.a. FCKN BSTRDS. Jahaa dan gaat iedereen Bibberen met Dr. Bibber en z'n kokosnotenmuziek voor uitgeprocedeerde nazi s (verdonk je hebt kokosnotenmelk aan je handen)
met enkel een tapedeck en een paar leuke tropische planten die hun roots hebben op de Obersalzberg.

STAPLERFAHRER (NL)

is duits voor heftruck chauffeur. Dat wordt weightliften met powerbooks. hij maakte o.a. een split release met incite/ op het Londonse Authorised Version label

STAPLERFAHRER - SCSI VS ATA (CDR by Tibprod) Behind the funny but untranslateable name Staplerfahrer is one Stefan de Turck, from Tilburg, The Netherlands. I believe he had various self-made releases before but this is the first time I hear him under the name Staplerfahrer. Working at home on macintosh computer he crafts together nice pieces of microscopic sound. The first three tracks are part of the Dead Scsi project on Radiantslab.com (remixes of dying harddisc). De Turck opens up the entire box of Pandora with all the possible plug ins and outs to transform the sounds he has - of whatever source we don't know. Rumblings, cracklings and processed static and feedback sounds alike, everything is down in bath of time stretching and max/msp work. Along the lines of Fennesz or Kim Cascone, but with enough tricks of his own. Nice work. (FdW)

Studeerde fysiologie, filosofie en kunstgeschiedenis. Hij is sound engeneer, programmeur, bewaker in musea en bromfietsdief. Speelde in eerdere bands (LEECH, ANUBIS) en is nog aktief in GROENLAND ORCHESTER en is de andere helft van AUGSBURGER TAFELCONFECT.

stalinistische ideale proletarische suburb in Krakau.

Ein halbesJahrhundert ist es her, dass gemeinsam mit einem maechtigen Stahlkombinat, den Tadeusz Sendimir Stahlwerken, einer Eisenhuette aus dem
Kanon kommunistischer Industrialisierung, in dem vor allem auf
Schwerindustrie gesetzt worden ist, in Krakau eine neue Wohnstadt fuer die Arbeiter und Angestellten des Werkes aus dem Boden gestampft worden ist. In solchen Projekten sollte die Gesellschaft der Zukunft, jenes gelobte Land sich entfalten, dem der polnische Nobelpreistraeger Wladislaw Reymont ein weiteres halbes Jahrhundert frueher in seinem Roman ueber die Industrialisierung der Stadt Lodz erste Gestalt verliehen hat. Nova Huta war als perfekte Stadt geplant, die die grosse Utopie erfuellen und verwirklichen sollte, die in direkte Konkurrenz zum konservativen Krakau treten sollte.

Ditmaal een speciale avond rondom videomaker en muzikant Kent Lambert.

Hij zal deze avond video's vertonen en daarna als one-man band getiteld ROOMMATE een live-set doen.

ROOMMATE is een vorm van scherpe doch zeer liefdevolle pop.

Een goeie mix van snerende electronica, zoetgevoicede stem, ironische teksten, warme melodica.

Hij heeft reeds menige cult-ballad geschreven over Frankenstein, River Phoenix, en tofu eten terwijl de wereld vergaat.

Het doet o.a. denken aan de Brian Eno elpees 'Taking Tiger Mountain' en 'Another Green World'.

Verder gaan er vergelijkingen van Brian Wilson tot Stephin Meritt en van John Cale tot Grandaddy.

U mag het zeggen. Iedere vergelijking is blunt natuurlijk.

In ieder geval: 'The war will start on monday, we will watch TV, we will change the channels, we will go to sleep'

VIDEOWERK:

Lambert weet goed raad met found-footage en prees zichzelf dan ook niet ongelukkig toen hij

diverse curieuse opnames in een ziekenhuis vond. 'Securithy Anthem' is veruit z'n bekendste werk (2003)

dat uit dit materiaal werd samengesteld, maar in z'n meest recente video Hymn of Reckoning (2006) duikelt

hij nog weer wat aardige fragmenten uit deze collectie op.

Sommigen noemen zijn werk 'experimentele video's', weer anderen spreken liever over 'video-kunst'.

Enkelen noemen het gewoon 'verspilde tijd moeite', maar dit oordeel laat 'ie graag bij iedereen persoonlijk liggen.

In het videoprogramma nieuw werk en klassiekers van hem zoals 'Security Anthem'.

'Een ode aan bloemen, angst, aardappelen en paranoia met een speciaal optreden van U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft' zegt hij er zelf over.

BIO: Die! Die! Die! is the best art-punk band to come out of the Australia/New Zealand region in years. In only a year and a half since this three-piece first formed, they have brought their abrasive yet addictive art rock to playing support for Franz Ferdinand, Straightjacket Fits and Shihad in Australia and New Zealand, toured Australia seven times (including tours with Wolfmother and the Homebake and Meredith festivals), and the United States and England once each. In March 2005, Die! Die! Die! released their debut EP and quickly followed it up with a self-titled full length release in September of that year. The album was recorded in Chicago by recording legend Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, Shellac) and mastered at Abbey Road studios by Steve Rooke (Franz Ferdinand, Paul McCartney). Currently released in New Zealand and Australia, Die! Die! Die! is being courted by labels in the US and the UK and looks forward to rereleasing their first album here later this year, and their second album by early 2007. Die! Die! Die! recently graced the mainstage at Australia's Big Day Out mega-festival supporting The White Stripes and Franz Ferdinand, and many critics raved that they upstaged the bigger acts that followed them. In the last month, Die! Die! Die! finished up a packed Western US tour, and played several raucous showcases at SXSW, and are touring Europe from late April through the end of May, finishing at the Dot To Dot Festival in Nottingham.

An innovator and pioneer of the '80s German tape scene, Ziegler is a techno-Dadaist composer/pop artist of the highest order, known for his frenetic live shows with toy instruments. His shimmering mix of cheap electronica, German vocals, weird rhythms, samples and guitars almost always manages to stick to a more or less loose song format tending to appeal not only to fans of early German new wave, but also to anyone who has an inexhaustible love for wonky melodies and funky sound bites. A master of many instruments, Ziegler is as likely to whip out a French horn as he is a beat box, and 'Punkt' collects more pop/noise/child music insouciance than you can shake a toy flute at.

RAWFISHBOYS: In the beginning there were five Rawfishboys, but after Nils Ostendorf, Toma Gouband and Martin Shonlieb mysteriously disappeared (rumours are they have been captured by a Japanese fishingboat), Joa and Brice decided to continue as a duo. They play an eclectic mix of rawmusic, ranging from introverted candlelight polkas to very long and slightly boring Strudelhymns. But most of all Rawfishextravaganzas! Joachim Badenhorst started playing clarinet at age 7. Besides his weekly classical lessons, he got involved in more 'sinful'artforms like playing in rockbands or spraying graffiti in his neighbourhood. After getting his ass kicked one night by a graffiti professional, he decided it was safer to express his feelings in the future on his clarinet. Kunstenaar Bibo presenteert het 2de doek op de loodswand van C. Steinweg Handelsveem B.V. aan de
Veerlaan op Katendrecht tegenover het Deliplein. Op 17 december 2005 om 17.00 uur wordt deze tweede
mega-fotocollage “WERELDPRODUCTENKAART verstuwd / opgeslagen sinds 1847” officieel
gepresenteerd.

De wijk Katendrecht heeft een kleurrijk heden en verleden, met een levendige handel in waren uit de
hele wereld. Grafisch kunstenaar Bibo ontwierp een kunstwerk bij het Deliplein, waarop een
“WERELDPRODUCTENKAART” op geheel eigen wijze gestalte krijgt.

Op de lange blinde muur van het stuwadoorsbedrijf Steinweg, die de kade aan het zicht onttrekt, wordt een visuele ordening aangebracht van producten die door de tijd heen op Katendrecht verscheept zijn. Dit grafisch-informatief kunstwerk in de vorm van een ruim 10 bij 6 meter groot doek geeft passanten op het Deliplein een ‘doorkijk’ op de activiteiten van de haven. Een wereldkaart, dit keer niet met de herkomst van de kleurrijke multiculturele Katendrechtse bevolking, maar de herkomst van de producten die aan- en afgevoerd worden aan de Veerkade. Door de ordening en vormgeving wordt het doek niet zozeer een 'info-panel' maar een visuele reis.

Met , eGOODIEPAL, Jan vd Dobbelsteen, TOKTEK, expo van Maarten Jansen en meer. (tzt bekend) Een meer installationele benadering van geluid dan dat het zonodig weer een concertuele benadering moet zijn. Eigenzinnige vorsers en eeuwenoude traditionelen bij elkaar gezet.
Over Goodiepal doen verhalen de ronde die hem bij leven reeds een soort van mythische lading geven. Hij was de huisstijl-ontwerper op het gebied van geluid van grote ondernemingen zoals Carlsberg en Nokia. Dat deed ie prima onze professor, totdat ie besloot deze tunes integraal op eigen label uit te brengen, notabene met de logo.s van deze bedrijven full size op deze (vinyl) picture discs. Dan heb je stront aan de knikker. Ontslag, processen, onrechtmatig gebruik, ide￫ele stellingname, intellectueel eigendom, etcetera. De toon was gezet..... Jan van den Dobbelsteen komt met 93 unica vinyl 7' die dan weer backward gespeeld moeten worden. Een installationele live-presentatie met en/of zonder de meester zelve in beeld. Tzal iig weer een belevenis voor oog- en oorwerk zijn. TOKTEK is een jonge hond, telkens weer op zoek naar sexy zaken. Op geluidsgebied wel te verstaan. Hij ontwikkelt software en hardware situaties die verrassende mogelijkheden genereren om geluid te creeeren. Deze avond wederom een tool die hangt als kunst en waar je in en uit kan pluggen. Nieuwe schilderkunst??? Oorverdovende geluidscircuits. Ook door publiek te hanteren. Maarten Janssen met een buddy presenteren elk een kunstwerk. Om ﾱ 17.00 zal de opening van deze expo plaatsvinden met sigaar en bubbelwijn Beide werken worden gekoppeld aan een levende noisette impro die zich gedurende de middag en avond ontwikkelt. Het fenomeen Pascal Plantinga verrast de wereld al jaren lang met CD's vol avontuurlijke waanzin. Als een porceleinkast op zoek naar olifanten begeeft hij zich op het slappe koord tussen pop en avant garde, en vindt onderweg nog voldoende andere aanknooppunten. Menig journalist is na het luisteren naar Pascal's laatste Ata Tak release 'Arctic Poppy' de weg in het universum van de hippe pop volledig kwijtgeraakt, maar wij van De Player weten wel beter: Niet verder zoeken, meteen Pascal boeken. Nu het nog kan! De karavaan die deze 'Indiana Jones van de moderne Rock 'n'Roll' naar de Player trekt bevat bovendien gasten van zware allure. Met trots presenteert Pascal Neue Deutsche Welle legende en producer Kurt Dahlke, a.k.a. Pyrolator, die tijdens het concert zijn toverkunsten als electricien zal opvoeren. De batterij wordt bezeten door Saskia von Klitzing, die in het dagelijks leven de maat slaat bij bij Fehlfarben en F.M. Einheit, maar zich in het gezelschap van Pascal ontplooit als een opgevoerde Groovebox. Dat het eerste concert van Pascal in deze unieke bezetting uitgerekend in De Player plaatsvindt is natuurlijk geen toeval. Want Playboy Plantinga zegt het in z'n laatste hit '24th Century Dinosaur' zelf: A man ain't a man if he can't play. So play!

In ''NLD...deel 1 Balance'' wisselen emoties elkaar af in kunstmatige of juist levendige vorm. Door het in gang zetten van bewegingen of de juist niet bewegingen versmelten tekst, mime, theater, film en live-video tot 1 beeld. Balance heeft een sterk live effect door de interactie tussen real-time computer animatie die in gang gezet wordt door lichamelijke beweging. Het hier en het nu van de voorstelling is het moment om de acteur alsook het publiek te prikkelen met nieuwe ervaringen. Fictie en reele beelden maken het decor van Balance tot een multidisciplinaire theatervoorstelling.
Sasha Antipin, Theatermaker afkomstig uit Rusland, vestigde zich twee jaar geleden in Amsterdam. In 2003 studeerde hij af aan de regieopleiding bij het GITIS, theateracademie in Moskou. Voor en tijdens zijn studie werkte hij internationaal als acteur, performer, clown en regisseur. In samenwerking met Alexandre Ostanine werkte hij het de afgelopen maanden aan een onderzoeksproject G-Therapy met de speciaal ontworpen software Motion Area. Sasha zoekt naar nieuwe visies op ruimtelijke, intellectuele en maatschappelijke controversen. Na zijn studie Informatica en wiskunde aan de Universiteit van Groningen werkte Alexandre Ostanine als software engineer aan verschillende programmas. Hij experimenteerde veelvuldig met het schrijven van software. Dit jaar werd door Ostanine en Antipin een geavanceerde versie baar getoond in het Ostadetheater, Amsterdam. Motion Area vergt een samenspel tussen software besturing en beweging zoals dat bij G-Therapy gedaan werd. Uitvoering op grotere schaal wordt nu tijdens Balance gepresenteerd.
